Who we are:
Northern Plains is a grassroots conservation and family agriculture group that organizes Montanans to protect our water quality, family farms and ranches, and unique quality of life. We work to raise the voices of rural and urban Montanans alike to fight for issues and policies that matter most to us. We aim to influence all decision makers while actively supporting those that align with our mission and goals. Northern Plains believes people working together can make a difference.
What we do:
On a fundamental level, Northern Plains is about people and the environment we all depend on, economic justice, rural self-determination, democracy, and accountability for the decisions made by corporations and government entities. These principles show up throughout our work, though the issues themselves change over time to meet real peoples’ needs.
To achieve these principles, we use a range of strategies that include:
Community Outreach
Community organizing, research, and public education to help us elevate public understanding of the issues and people’s desire to be part of the solution;
Trainings
Trainings and leadership development to help us strengthen the voices of Montanans;
Political Action
Legislative lobbying, litigation, and agency work to help us hold public officials and corporations accountable.
Civic Education
Educating our members about candidates for local, state, and federal office who champion our issues. We work to change the political landscape in non-election years by elevating these crucial issues to elected officials that will stand up for our values, and we seek to empower and activate rural Montanans.
We are building power among everyday Montanans to raise our voices when decisions are being made that affect our lives.
